IRC: About IceChat and registering to Q
Since we now have an IRC channel (#hsclan.urt) I've decided to post here a few things.
I'm using [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], a free IRC client.
Download it, or if you're lazy to have a client, use the webchat. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
About registering to Q: this is needed to get rights on IRC channels which have the Q bot.
It's very easy, here's a tutorial, taken from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Now, if you are using IceChat, you may want to set it up so each time you turn IceChat on, you automatically AUTH and log-in to the server.
Here's how to automatically AUTH:
The "Enable AutoPerform List" box should be ticked.
How it should look:
And here goes how to auto-join the server on each start-up:
And at the end, it should look like this:
If you have questions, post them here.

Quakenet wrote:Before you can use our services (Q) you will need an account, here's how to get one:
Saying 'Hello' to Q
This will create a Q account with the name of the nick you are using at the moment. You do this by using the following command:
/msg Q HELLO youremail@address youremail@address
If the account creation is successful a link where you can obtain your password will be sent to the email address you supplied, you will be required to read and reenter a series of characters before you are given your password. If account creation failed then Q will inform you of the reason, usually the problem is either the account already exists or your nickname has special characters in, in both cases change your nickname to a more suitable one.
Once you have this password you can then use the AUTH command:
/msg [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] AUTH username password
Where username is identical to the nick you used when you said HELLO.
You can check you are authed using the WHOAMI command:
/msg Q whoami
If you see a message back from Q that includes the line:
-Q(TheQBot@CServe.quakenet.org)- -Information for user John (using account john)
...then you know you have said HELLO and AUTH'd correctly.
Change your Q password
When you say HELLO to Q, you will be assigned a default password. We strongly suggest that you change it. Change your password by using the NEWPASS command:
/msg [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] NEWPASS oldpassword newpassword newpassword (for example, /msg [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] NEWPASS john notjohn notjohn).
Q will acknowledge a successful password change by displaying:
-Q(TheQBot@CServe.quakenet.org)- OK, password changed.
Note that Q will warn you if the robustness of your password is considered low. Read more about it at How to choose a secure password.
You are now ready to use our services.
Now, if you are using IceChat, you may want to set it up so each time you turn IceChat on, you automatically AUTH and log-in to the server.
Here's how to automatically AUTH:
- Click on "irc.quakenet.org"
- Click on the button "Edit server": a widow will apper.
- Click on "AutoPerform" on the new window's left side; a box will appear.
- Write in that box "/auth yournick yourpass".
The "Enable AutoPerform List" box should be ticked.
How it should look:
- Click to show auto-AUTH command:
- [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
And here goes how to auto-join the server on each start-up:
- Follow the same steps as for the previous tutorial, until step #2.
- Click on "AutoJoin List" on the new window's left side.
- You'll see a horizontal stripe where you have to type the channel's name, in our case: #hsclan.urt
And at the end, it should look like this:
- Click to show AutoJoin:
- [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
If you have questions, post them here.
